His Rally career started 1969 when he became a member of Scuderia Bielefeld.

In 1971 he became a licensed co-pilot and had many chances to collect experiences, including a 5-time roll-over with "Manta Schorsch" in an Opel Manta 1600 at the Rallye Dissen. In 1971 he participated in 33 rally events.

In 1972 he had his first over all victory: at DMV Muensterland with Karl-Heinz Becker auf Ford Capri RS. In 1972 he participated in 33 rally events.

From 1972 to 1973 he participated in several national and international rally events as both co-pilot and drive achieving many podium positions. Vehicles used were NSU TT, Simca Rallye 2, Golf GTI and Ford Escort.

Starting from 1976 Wolfgang and his family moved to Lagos, Nigeria allowing him to only sporadically participate in rally events.
